I, like many others, are saddened by what has happened in Haiti. When you see the images, please remember that this IS REAL. People are suffering, they have lost all that they've made, bought, grown, prayed for, earned.
I am terming today Wishful Wednesday (for me). I am reminded of stories, recently, where people have knocked others for posting bra colors in hopes of raising Breast Cancer Awareness, where people are mocked for trying to reach out. I have a different opinion.
I believe that giving is caring. Giving of your time, your energy, your emotions.
Smiling can change someone's day. Does it matter if that person is healthy or ill? A person is a person. We all matter. Pass it on.
Raising awareness for any illness or cause costs nothing but time. And, yes, even little things like bra colors brings illnesses to the forefront. I'm not saying to ignore other illnesses - Every illness matters. Raise awareness for all humankind, not just women, not just our breasts, but for children, for men, for everyone. Pick an illness, any illness, and go to town helping to raise awareness. Unfortunately, there are far too many illnesses, and not enough people willing to give of themselves.
You know the guy on the street corner with the sign? The one you walk by and hope he doesn't approach you? Please, approach him. Give a dollar or two. Hand him a sandwich. Those signs that people hand write, "Homeless, three children," whether they are real situations or not, the person feels it necessary to find the courage to beg for help. Help. It only takes a moment, some change, a smile. And every morsel of paying-it-forward helps someone in this world. That someone could one day be you.
My hope for Wishful Wednesday is that people will remember that the people in Haiti are real people, their devastation is real, and that devastation of some sort; whether it's health, natural disaster, war, it's happening all over the world. Please don't turn your back on people. Please begin to think (and act upon) what you can do to help others.
