Wellfleet Bonfire 2010

July 30, 2010 by thinkhappy

Bonfire (n):  A large fire built outdoors, as for signaling or in celebration of an event.

That's the online definition of bonfire. My definition varies slightly:

Bonfire (n): A large fire built outdoors as an excuse for a gathering of friends.

We have been lucky enough to meet a number of wonderful people while vacationing at the Cape. Last year we happened upon Peg (fellow Women's Nester) at Nauset beach. We quickly realized that fate was at work, and we had been destined to meet,--we're both Cape girls at heart. Gina and Chris, owners of a neighboring cottage, have also become cherished friends. And his year has been no different. We have met a number of kind and funny people that we enjoyed chatting with.

Just a week or so ago, Peg was at the Cape again and invited us to a bonfire with her extended family (thanks Peg!!). We had a blast! My boys have talked about it every day since the event. So, when I was trying to figure out how we could spend time with our other new friends, in an environment that would be condusive to (sometimes loudly laughing) children, a bonfire came to mind--the perfect excuse for a gathering!

We laughed so hard tonight that each of us, at one point or another, thought we'd wet our pants! Jennifer and Peter (also neighboring cottage owners) were delightful and interesting. Homemade sangria and light-up bracelets-turned-jump-rope-turned human-ring-toss, both brought by Jen, were a real hit amongst all of us. The moon crept up like an orange alien over the ocean, causing a "What the f*** is that?" from another bonfire down the beach. My kids got a kick out of hearing that! Games of Gossip, Pogo, and Whoop, Bunny, Bunny (thanks again, Peg!!), caught even the adults off guard.

Here are a few pics of our evening. I hope yours was just as fun! And the next time you're looking for a great excuse for a get together--think of a beach bonfire. It was the perfect way to get to know some really wonderful people. My only regret; my husband is still in Iraq and Chris was unable to join us. But...the summer is still young!
