Walnut Shell Animals

Walnut Animals: I thought both boys and girls would like to make these. You can have them create their own animals from their imagination of look at the samples below. 

Materials:

  • lightweight cardboard
  • whole walnuts
  • 1 walnut half - for turtle
  • Acrylic paints: gray, green, light blue, orange, purple, white
  • Paintbrushes
  • Toothpicks
  • Craft glue
  • Scraps of felt: green, black, orange, pink, purple, white
  • 1” diameter pom-poms: 1 gray, 2 white
  • ¼” diameter pom-poms: 2 each white, pink
  • 1 (3/4” diameter) green pom-pom
  • 8 (1/8” diameter) black beads
  • 6” (1/16” wide)  ribbon
  •  

Turtle:

  • Paint walnut half green and with a toothpick paint the flowers on. Cut out a piece of cardboard with 4 legs and a rounded base to fit under the walnut. Using cardboard as a stencil, cut out shape from green felt. Glue onto the cardboard. Paint base green let dry.  Glue together after dry. Cut out 5 petals from felt and a round circle for the center and glue onto the flower. Glue onto a green pom pom. Glue 2 beads onto the pom pom as eyes. Glue pom pom onto walnut.
