Lights, No Lights, Lights, No Lights, Yeah! Lights

December 3, 2008 by govtmule

The power went off at my house today around four while I was vacuuming. My first thought was that the damn cord came unplugged - again. But then I heard Jordan shout out, "Why did the lights go out?" Shit! Now I'm rushing to get things done before we lose daylight. Jordan had basketball practice tonight, and I still needed to get him to finish his homework, eat dinner and get dressed. When the power goes out at our house, we do not  have water either. Luckily, we have propane for cooking.

I called the power company and the nice automated voice told be that the estimated time that service would be restored is 3:46am - shit! So I managed to feed the kid and get him out the door for basketball. In between, I answered a million questions - mostly with "I don't know." "Why'd the power go off?" "Are they fixing it?" "What happends if they can't fix it?" "Don't you think it's really dark in here?" "Can we leave Duke (our dog) home in the dark?" "Won't dad be scared when he comes home and it's dark?"

When we got home from b-ball, still no lights. It's a clear night and I know we are in for a cold one. My husband found candles and flashlights and started a fire in the wood burning furnace.  After being back home for about 20 minutes, the lights came back on (happy dance)...and then went back out 5 minutes later. Finally they came back and I am so thankful.

All I could think was that I've have not been on the Nest all day and with no power, I'm going to miss so much. Well that and, SHIT it's going to be cold in the morning!
