The other day I signed onto Twitter and saw this tweets: "@Bethany_Lopez I nominated @Melissa_Foster for a Shorty Award" the tweet included this link, http://shortyawards.com/Melissa_Foster.
My first public response was, "Wow, thank you!" I couldn't believe that someone that I knew online would care enough or be generous enough to nominate me for anything. Then, I sat back and wondered how people could know how tall short I am, and when did they start giving awards for stature? A few
minutes later, a nomination from @AmyManemann came through, then a number of others followed. I was floored. I decided to click the link to the Shorty Award and see what other short people might have been nominated. Much to my surprise, J.K. Rowling was #1 for the Shorty Award that I was nominated for, so I searched further. I was nominated in the category of "author". It makes sense that J.K. Rowling was #1, but how did it make sense that I was #7? I'm a little nobody (in my mind). A little more reading brought the answer to light. The Shorty Awards honor industry leaders in social media. My chatty behavior led to this honor. Not only is social media a great way to connect with people, but it turns out, that you just might get nominated for awards that you've never heard of before. I am in very good company on the Shorty Award boards. I'm riding just above Jodi Picoult (I know, can you believe it?) and a few below Hillary Duff. I didn't even know she was an author.
Thank you, Bethany Lopez, for your vote of confidence, and for everyone else who took the time to vote for me. I'm truly honored.
