Cherish your mother

November 7, 2008 by govtmule

Today I attended the funeral of a former co-worker and friend's mother. This woman and I used to work together but she left to stay home with her baby a couple of years ago. We have kept in touch and I found out on Sat. That her mother died on Halloween.

Her mother was only 61 years old. She died of a pulmonary disease. During the years that I worked with her, I remember all the times she complained about her mom. They just did not get along very well. Today when I saw my friend and how heart-broken she was over her mother's death and that her, now 2, children who are 4 and 1 years old, would never get to know their grandmother, it was the saddest thing.

The pastor in this church said, "We should all remember to cherish the ones we love - Here on this side of Jordan." And it hit me so hard. I love my mother, but, like my friend, we don't always get along so great. We are just very different. But the thought of losing my mother brings tears to my eyes instantly. I need to do a much better job overlooking the small things that annoy me about her and focus on the many reasons why I love her and tell her how much I love and appreciate her - before I can't.
