Can somone explain how the kindle works???

I went to amazon.com to put it on my wishlist and there are two choices....one for $139 and one for $189 (I think) which includes free wifi....
Not sure what wifi actually is?? I always thought it was internet connection but now I'm confused...
Anyone?
