Bottles, diapers, onesies, oh my!

January 6, 2010 by gardengirl

After much pushing from my mother, we finally started registering for baby stuff for the shower she is throwing me.  This task is as daunting as picking out one pair of shoes at DSW...

Why did they have to go and commercialize baby gear?  Honestly there are so many things available right now for babies/moms that you know did not exist when we were kids.  DOes my kid need a wipey warmer - how posh!  Does my kid need an activity mat, a bouncer chair, a bouncer seat, a swing, a pack and play, a bassinet, etc, etc etc.  It's out of hand!

I have decided only to register for things I really need/want.  The big stuff:  stroller, carseat, bottles, etc.  But the problem is there are too many to chose from!  I've polled a bunch of my friends that recently had babies for their input otherwise I'd be drowning.

DH and I spent an hour online last night registering for must have items and we'll hit the store on Saturday to get the small detail items.  I'm really excited for the baby shower despite my utter hate for them in general.  The reason for this is that baby showers, in my opinion are no longer a party for celebration but are focused more on gifts.  I had this one friend who complained after her shower that all she got was the small stuff and how she'd have to go and buy things herself.  Her entire shower was show up, open gifts while eating, nad then leave.  There is something wrong with that picture.

A shower is supposed to be to celebrate the mom and coming baby.  That is why I have told my mom/sister to put gifts are optional on the inivite.  I want everyone to come and enjoy themselves and not just focus on going to the baby store and finding a gift.  The shower will not be focused on gifts at all - at least I hope not.  Just coming and showing your love is enough for me.

I promise dh and I will be able to get by without a wipey and bottle warmer, a designer diaper bag, and 20 packages pre bought of diapers...
